What's in a Name?

enichols94

What’s in a name? A lot actually! As a part of our 50th anniversary celebration, we are going to dive into Stallings’ history. When Stallings incorporated in 1975, why did the first officials pick “Stallings” for the name of our Town?

Early records show that in 1902, Matthew Stallings came to this area from Harrisburg, NC. He bought over 200 acres on which he farmed, started a general store, and developed the area’s first school, Stallings School. Matthew’s brother, Martin, followed him a year later and hence the area became known as “Stallingsville” - welcoming newcomers and various occupations. A newspaper clipping at the time stated that “Mr. Stallings will be glad to offer special inducements to manufacturers or others desiring site for permanent homes.” Mr. Stallings knew exactly how special this place was and wanted to grow "Stallingsville."

Seventy years later when the Town incorporated, Carl “Tip” Stallings, a relative of Matthew Stallings, was selected as the Town's first Mayor... which surely made his ancestors proud! Mr. Tip Stallings was instrumental in organizing the Town and served on the Town Council until his death.

With so much work done by the Stallings Family to grow and improve this area, it’s easy to see why the name “Stallings” was chosen for this great Town. There is so much history in just that one name! Matthew Stallings is surely impressed of how far we’ve come! It was his family's home, and now Stallings is exactly how home should feel!
