November seems to be synonymous with leaves, turkey, pumpkin spice… and elections. But how are Stallings elections held, when are they held, and who is in charge of the process?
Every municipality (or local government) can be different regarding its number of board members, length of terms, and time of elections. The municipal charter (or incorporation documents) for each municipality sets out these parameters for each local government.
In Stallings, the governing body is called the Town Council and is made up of seven members: one Mayor and six Council Members. Each Council Member represents one of the six districts in Stallings. The Council Member must reside in the district he/she represents when the Mayor can reside in any district.
A Stallings Council Seat term is four years in length and Council Members have no limit on the number of times they can be elected (known as term limits). Stallings Council Seats are also non-partisan, meaning one’s political party preference does not come into play and ballots do not list any party affiliation.
Every other November, two or more of the Council Member Seats are up for election. Elections are organized, managed, and facilitated by the Union County Board of Elections, not Town local offices. Those who wish to run for a seat must register with the Union County Board of Elections in July prior to a November election. On Stallings residents’ November election ballots, the Town Council Candidates will be listed for voting along with any other local, state, or federal election races for that November.
