Ugggg… traffic! In our part of the world, it seems like traffic is always a topic of our conversation. Being situated near one of the fastest growing cities in the country, Stallings feels the growing pains that come from people wanting to live and work in such a popular area. And when those heavily traveled on corridors need repair, who pays for it? Let’s break down the facts.
There are four types of road ownership: federal, state, local/municipal, and private. All four types can all be in the same location. For example, I-485 is federally owned; Old Monroe Road/Old Charlotte Highway is state owned; and Kerry Greens neighborhood roads are locally/municipally owned. There are also some neighborhood roads and separate drives that are privately owned. Whoever owns the road is financially responsible for its repairs.
With the exception of privately owned roads, the funding for road upkeep comes from various tax sources. For Stallings, Stallings citizen tax dollars as well as North Caroline Powell Bill Funds (a state program that provides street aid to incorporated municipalities) are used to fund street repair. Each year, the Town petitions the state for its allowed allotment of Powell Bill funds and the Town Council also budgets local tax dollars towards Stallings roads’ needs.
But whether or not you are on a Stallings maintained road, you can always tell you’re in Stallings based on the street sign. Look for our signature Stallings medallion on the green road sign. Not only does that tell you that you’re in Stallings, it should also remind you that we’re so glad you’re here!
Fun Fact: Monroe Road was first paved in 1934 using local crushed rock and red clay.
